what happens on the shoot...?

HERE’S A BIT MORE INFO ON THE SHOOT...

feel free to email Matt on photos@mattjamie.co.uk

or call 07976890643 with any other questions.

WHERE IS THE SHOOT?

I’ll be in touch with an address for the shoot, which varies depending on studio availability.  In Newcastle it is usually at MAYFIELD STUDIOS, CARLIOL SQUARE.

If you have a suitable space at your college or home I can sometimes arrange to meet there if a studio space isn’t required.  You are welcome to bring anyone along with you to the shoot if you’d like to.  If you are under 16 a chaperone will need to attend the shoot with you (I have DBS clearance).

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO WEAR?

For a headshot session, bring a variety of tops with different neck lines.  Key things are:

  1. BulletGenerally plain dark colours with no bold patterns or stripes.

  2. BulletNot too “fussy”- a headshot should be about you, not your clothes!

  3. Bullet(Having said that if there’s something you particularly like, or has a classical feel etc, do bring it along!).

  4. BulletIf you’re wanting full length shots obviously you’ll need to think about shoes / trousers / skirts as well.

  5. BulletThink about what you might want to do with hair (up/down/tied back)

  6. BulletIf possible bring a vest you can wear under other tops as this is handy for getting changed if we shoot some outdoor images.

  1. BulletFor guys, generally a shirt and a t-shirt is enough, and a smart jacket or suit /tie if you want “corporate” shots

  2. BulletTry to avoid a pure white shirt if possible - light blue or grey is better as white can ‘bleach out’ in bright light.

  3. BulletGuys sometimes like to start with stubble / beard and shave during the shoot to get both looks.

It’s good to bring a fair mix of tops - think of things you might wear to an audition - and we can look through them on the shoot and see which work best.

If we’re shooting a modelling / commercial session, you might like to bring someone to do hair & makeup. If you’d like me to arrange someone for this please contact me for a quote.  Generally for a headshot session basic hair and makeup is all you’ll need as a more natural look is better for acting shots.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE SHOOT?

The shoot lasts an hour - depending on how many changes of clothes and variations of hairstyle you’d like to look at.  Studio bookings are for a 1 hour slot in the studio.  If you’d like longer (for example if you want portfolio/modelling shots as well as headshots) you can pay a small fee for the extra studio time (based on studio cost - currently £20/h)  Weather permitting we may do some outdoor shots during the session as we go, depending on the location.  I keep things relaxed so we’re not rushing straight into shooting the minute you arrive.

During the shoot I take over 150 images.  I shoot the whole session in colour which I can then convert to black and white afterwards if needed.  Some people still like black and white images, though personally I would always recommend using colour as your main casting images.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? / HOW DO I CHOOSE THE SHOTS?

You can view the images on camera during or immediately after the shoot if time allows, but the best way to see them is online.

After the shoot, I will email you a PDF document of the images - usually on the same day or next day.  These images are UN-EDITED previews - i.e. they’re not cropped or retouched, just straight out of the camera.  You then choose which images you’d like me to retouch.  I do the work on your selection then email you the final high resolution images, making any alterations you might request (more on retouching below...).  I can also upload them to Spotlight, Mandy.com or other casting sites if you wish.

You get either two (students) or three (actors) finished photos included in the price of the shoot.  You can purchase extra images if needed. (click here for prices for extras)

Your shoot is on a SATISFACTION GUARANTEE - so if you’re not happy with the images I’ll refund you minus the cost of the studio hire. (see info page for details).

HOW MUCH RETOUCHING DO YOU DO?

I do a “low key” retouch on your headshots - keeping them looking natural, while clearing up minor blemishes and stray hairs, and enhancing the contrast and detail if needed.  I don’t do an extensive “airbrush” on headshot images, as this is not useful for casting work.  The key factor is creating an image which looks like you, so that the image the casting people have seen and chosen you from looks like the person who walks into the room!

For modelling images or certain portfolio shots I can retouch images to your specifications.

DO I GET ALL THE IMAGES FROM THE SHOOT?

You only get high resolution copies of the images you select from the shoot - not the complete shoot (150+ images).  You get to view all the images from the shoot in the preview PDF, and then select your final options from these.

The retouching process, though minimal, is a crucial part of the process, so I don’t provide copies of all the unfinished images as these are not “ready for use” and don’t best represent you, or my work. (For example, there may be stray hairs or blemishes, or minor distractions in the background, perhaps the contrast could be made more punchy or the colours warming up a touch, and so on - fixing these minor details are all ways of making your picture stand out more and help to get you noticed).

If you find you want a large number of images from the shoot I will always be happy to do a deal on the retouching for extra images...

WHAT IF I’VE BOOKED BUT I NEED TO CANCEL...?

If you get a casting or a job for the day you’re booked in for a shoot let me know as soon as possible and we might be able to move things around a few hours if you’re still available the same day.  I also work as an actor so I understand the challenges!

Do let me know as soon as possible if there’s a problem, especially for studio shoots as I will have studio time paid for which will need to be cancelled or filled with another booking to avoid me incurring extra expenses! You will be charged a £20 studio deposit but this will be discounted off your booking if you are able to re-book another date - so you won’t lose the money.

Very occasionally I may have to re-arrange a session myself if something comes up for me which I can’t move - so make sure we have each other’s mobile numbers in case of last minute issues.

HOW DOES THE SATISFACTION GUARANTEE WORK...?

Sometimes it can feel like a lot of pressure to get “the” headshot on your shoot - and spending your money on a shoot can feel like a gamble - what if it doesn’t work out?  I want you to feel totally relaxed and confident during the shoot, so I offer the session on a money-back guarantee - which hopefully takes away at least the financial pressure!  If you’re not happy with the images from our shoot you don’t have to pay the shoot fee.  There is just the £20 studio charge to cover my costs which is non-refundable.  Once you’ve paid this, you only pay the full fee once you’ve seen the images and decided to use them.
